EPS Pension Hike: Minimum Pension May Increase by ₹1,000?

Mumbai, October 27: Pensioners under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) are hopeful for an increase in the minimum monthly pension, which currently stands at ₹1,000. Reports suggest that the 240th meeting of the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is scheduled for November 19, 2026, in Gir, Gujarat, where this issue may be discussed.
The demand for raising the minimum pension has been a long-standing concern among employee organizations and pensioners, who argue that the current amount is insufficient to cope with rising inflation and daily expenses. While there is anticipation regarding the proposal, it remains unclear whether the meeting will approve any increase.
Until an official announcement is made by the government or EPFO, the expectation of a pension exceeding ₹1,000 should not be considered a certainty.
The EPS is a social security scheme under the EPFO aimed at providing regular pensions to eligible employees after retirement. The pension amount is determined based on the employee’s pensionable salary and service duration.
Currently, the minimum monthly pension under EPS is ₹1,000, but not every EPFO member automatically qualifies for this amount. Eligibility criteria, pensionable service, and other conditions must be met. Employee organizations are advocating for an increase in the minimum pension to provide better financial support post-retirement.
As the November meeting approaches, pensioners will be closely monitoring discussions regarding the potential increase in the minimum pension. However, until a formal decision is made, the specifics of any increase or its implementation timeline remain uncertain.
