Earthquake Shakes Beijing: Tremors Felt Across Chinese Capital Late at Night

Beijing/Hong Kong, May 19 – A moderate earthquake struck near China’s capital city of Beijing early Sunday morning, startling residents and prompting evacuations in some areas. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale, while the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) recorded a magnitude of 4.2.

Earthquake

The quake hit at 1:21 AM local time and was centered near Yongqing County in neighboring Hebei province, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The epicenter was reported to be just 13 kilometers away from central Beijing, according to the Beijing Earthquake Agency.

Tremors Felt Across the City

The sudden tremor shook many Beijing residents out of their sleep. Students were seen evacuating their dormitories in panic, and videos circulating on Chinese social media showed ceiling fans and household items violently shaking. Many residents took to Weibo and other platforms to report their experiences, making the earthquake one of the top trending topics overnight.

The Beijing Earthquake Agency confirmed that while the tremors were clearly felt in several districts of the city, there were no reports of structural damage to buildings. “The earthquake did not impact the normal functioning of daily life or industrial production,” the agency said in a statement.

A City on Fault Lines

Beijing, home to over 22 million people, sits in a seismically active region and is intersected by more than a dozen seismic fault lines. One significant fault line runs from the northeastern Shunyi District toward downtown Beijing, contributing to occasional tremors felt in the city.

While no casualties or major damage were reported, the quake served as a reminder of the city’s vulnerability to natural seismic activity. Authorities have not issued any aftershock warnings but are continuing to monitor the situation.
