Tariffs to Begin from August 1
US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods. The decision will come into effect from August 1. On Wednesday, Trump made this announcement on the social platform Truth Social, stating that the US will impose an additional 25 percent tariff on products imported from India starting next month.

In addition, Trump has also announced a penalty on India for purchasing oil from Russia.
“India Is a Friend, But Trade Has Been Limited”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that despite being friends, trade between India and the US has remained limited. He stated, “Remember, India is our friend, but over the past few years, we have done relatively little trade with them because they impose very high tariffs. They have the highest in the world, and India has the toughest trade barriers of any country.”

Trump Criticises India’s Defence and Energy Trade with Russia
The US President further said, “Moreover, India has always purchased most of its military equipment from Russia and, like China, conducts the highest level of trade with Russia. At a time when everyone wants Russia to end the war in Ukraine – this is not okay!”
He added that India will now face not just the 25 percent tariff from August 1 but also a penalty.
US-India Trade Deficit ‘Very High’
