Bhubaneswar, October 6 (Udaipur Kiran): Tension gripped Cuttack after stone-pelting during a Durga Puja immersion procession, prompting the authorities to impose curfew in 13 police station areas of the city. The Commissionerate Police announced a 36-hour curfew starting from 10 PM on Sunday to restore order and prevent further unrest.
The curfew is in effect in the following areas: Dargah Bazaar, Manglabag, Cantonment, Puri Ghat, Lalbag, Bidanasi, Markat Nagar, CDA Phase-II, Malgodown, Badambadi, Jagatpur, 42 Mouza, and Sadar police station limits.
Police Commissioner S. Devdutt Singh stated that the decision was taken after a detailed review of the situation. He warned that strict action will be taken against anyone violating curfew orders or disturbing peace.
Meanwhile, Odisha DGP Y.B. Khurania visited Cuttack to review the situation and appealed to citizens to cooperate with the administration and rely only on official updates from the police website. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the DGP to camp in Cuttack to monitor the situation closely.
To curb the spread of rumours and inflammatory content, the state government has temporarily suspended internet and social media services in parts of Cuttack. The Home Department stated that this step was necessary to control misinformation circulating on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, and Snapchat.
The violence reportedly broke out late Friday night in the Dargah Bazaar area during the Durga immersion procession, in which several people, including Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari, were injured.
