CPI(M) Demands SIT Probe into Mysterious Death of Young Woman at Tripura Medical College

Agartala, June 15: Political and social circles in Tripura are raising questions following the mysterious death of a 24-year-old woman working at a private medical college. The state’s main opposition party, CPI(M), has called for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the incident.

Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhary visited the victim’s home on Sunday to meet with her family. He was accompanied by several senior party leaders and the state secretary of the youth organization, Nabrun Deb.

After discussions with the family and local residents, Chaudhary claimed that the woman’s death might not be a suicide but rather a case of murder. He questioned how the police could reach a conclusion before the post-mortem report was available, asserting that the truth of the incident would not come to light without an SIT or judicial inquiry.

Chaudhary alleged that prior to the incident, the victim’s mother had asked her to come home, but the college administration denied her permission to leave for three days. He also claimed that the woman had recently been transferred to another department and was assigned to work the night shift against her wishes.

The private medical college is located in the Madhuban area of West Tripura district and is operated by a non-governmental organization based in Birbhum, West Bengal.

The CPI(M) leader stated that the victim’s family and local residents are dissatisfied with the progress of the police investigation. He criticized the investigating officers, alleging that the concerned SDPO had prematurely made statements suggesting the case was related to a romantic affair.

Meanwhile, the Tripura government’s Home Department has ordered a magistrate inquiry into the case on June 11. According to an order issued by Additional Secretary Tarit Kanti Chakma, the District Magistrate and Collector of West Tripura, Dr. Vishal Kumar, has been tasked with the investigation and is required to submit a detailed report to the Home Department within 15 days.

Reports indicate that the woman had previously worked as a caretaker at the medical college and had recently been assigned to the examination cell. Her body was discovered on the night of June 10 on the college premises.

Following the incident, the police initiated an investigation and sent the body for post-mortem at Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in the presence of the family and college administration. A young man has also been arrested in connection with the case.

The family has expressed concerns about the possibility of murder and is demanding a fair, transparent, and thorough investigation. Some local residents have also raised suspicions of sexual harassment prior to her death.
