Mumbai, June 25: Sanjay Dina Patil, Member of Parliament from Mumbai North-East and a member of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, has found himself at the center of a political controversy after using abusive language against media personnel and openly threatening them. Following sharp criticism from various political and social circles, Patil has issued an unconditional public apology.
In a fit of anger captured on camera, Patil used derogatory terms for journalists and instructed them to keep their microphones away from his face. He stated, “If you people come here again, I will beat you and drive you away. Record this on camera. I am saying this in front of the police. Do whatever you want.”
The aggressive behavior and disrespectful language of the MP have been condemned by Maharashtra’s media organizations and political leaders, who labeled the threats against journalists as unacceptable. As the controversy escalated, Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde intervened, advising Patil to acknowledge his mistake.
Shinde remarked that personal attacks have increased following political tensions and party divisions, but elected representatives should maintain decorum with the media.
After the intervention from top leadership, Patil retracted his statement and issued an official apology, stating that his anger was a result of extreme mental stress. He explained that since switching parties, he and his family (wife, daughter, and late father) have faced continuous false accusations and humiliating questions.
Patil mentioned that he had politely asked journalists not to ask further questions as he had clarified his position, but he lost his temper due to persistent inquiries about his family. He expressed, “I sincerely apologize to the journalism community for my words.”
He also stated that he is fully prepared to cooperate with any police investigation or inquiry regarding the incident.
