Kolkata, July 23: In a shocking incident on Thursday, a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier opened fire at a camp in Baishnabnagar, Malda district, resulting in the deaths of two fellow soldiers. The accused has been arrested following the incident.
According to BSF sources, the shooting claimed the lives of two soldiers, while another individual sustained serious injuries. Reports indicate that the accused soldier had faced allegations of firing at his colleagues a year ago and had been punished under BSF regulations. His sentence had recently concluded, leading to this latest incident.
The headquarters of the BSF’s 119th and 71st battalions is located in Malda. On Thursday afternoon, Shivam Mishra, a resident of Chhattisgarh, allegedly opened fire on his colleagues.
The deceased have been identified as 51-year-old Ajay Kumar Singh from the Manjhi area of Chapra district in Bihar, and 37-year-old Ambadar Suresh Dargu from Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. The injured soldier, 44-year-old Vikas Brahma from Mohanda village under the Polba police station in West Bengal, has been admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital for treatment. All three soldiers belonged to the 71st battalion of the BSF.
Officials from the Baishnabnagar police station have initiated an investigation into the incident. District Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh stated that the matter is under investigation. DIG Surendra Kumar Jha of the BSF Malda sector confirmed that an inquiry has also commenced.
Reports suggest that preparations were underway to send the accused home following the completion of his punishment, coinciding with the incident that has caused a stir in the Baishnabnagar area.
