New Delhi | July 21, 2025 — In a sudden and unexpected move, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post, citing health concerns as the reason. The resignation was submitted just moments ago, sending shockwaves across the political landscape.

Dhankhar was elected as the 14th Vice President of India in 2022, defeating opposition candidate Margaret Alva in the election held on August 6, 2022. He secured 528 out of 725 valid votes, while Alva received 182 votes.
A Political Journey Rooted in Rajasthan
Born on May 18, 1951, in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Jagdeep Dhankhar hails from a humble farming background. He completed his early education in his native village before enrolling at the Sainik School in Chittorgarh. Though selected for the National Defence Academy (NDA), Dhankhar chose to pursue higher education instead.

He graduated from Rajasthan University and later earned a law degree. He began his legal career in Jaipur, which laid the foundation for his future in public service.
Former Governor of West Bengal
Dhankhar was appointed as the 28th Governor of West Bengal by then President Ram Nath Kovind on July 30, 2019. During his tenure, he often made headlines for his outspoken views and confrontations with the state government.
He previously served as a Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu between 1989 and 1991, and also held a position as a Union Minister during the governments of V.P. Singh and Chandra Shekhar.
What Happens Next?
With the Vice President’s post now vacant, political observers are closely watching for the Election Commission’s next steps regarding the appointment of Dhankhar’s successor. The Vice President of India also serves as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, making this a key constitutional position.
This development adds a new chapter to India’s political timeline and raises questions about upcoming leadership shifts within the central government.
