The Liberal Party in Brazil has accepted the results of the presidential run-off, despite opposition from right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro. Valdemar Costa Neto, the party’s leader, issued a statement acknowledging the election results while expressing concerns about the electoral process.

Bolsonaro was defeated by incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, losing by over 4.4 million votes. Since then, Bolsonaro has not formally conceded and labeled the results ‘unacceptable,’ citing an extension of voting hours as a basis for his claims. He announced plans to pursue legal action to annul the election results.

“We recognise the presidential election results, but we believe the issues raised need to be properly clarified,” Costa Neto said.

Following the election, Brazilian federal police requested that Bolsonaro surrender his passports amid speculation about potential plans to leave the country, which he has denied. Bolsonaro stated he would comply with the request, claiming, “I never had any intention of leaving the country.”

Concerns about the election process stem from differing petitions for extended voting hours from both candidates, due to heavy rains affecting voter turnout in southern Brazil. The Supreme Court agreed to extend voting by two hours, which Bolsonaro argued disadvantaged his supporters.

Research indicates that the extension resulted in only about 35,000 additional votes, a small fraction of Lula’s total. Lula won with 51.7% of the votes against Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, a more significant margin than in previous elections.

US President Donald Trump has publicly supported Bolsonaro, calling the election “rigged” and “terrible,” though he did not explicitly endorse Bolsonaro. Trump’s comments have added to an environment of distrust regarding the election.

“Elections have to be indisputable and it looked very bad to me,” Trump said.

The aftermath of the election raises questions about Bolsonaro’s commitment to democratic principles, echoing his father Jair Bolsonaro’s efforts to contest the 2022 election outcome. Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a prison sentence for attempting to overturn that result.

Reports suggest that Flávio Bolsonaro may reconsider pursuing legal challenges against the election results due to the significant margin of defeat and the validation of results by the Supreme Court.
