Apple is reportedly planning to release an Apple TV with a built-in camera to support FaceTime and other video calling apps. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is actively working on it, but has not announced a release date for the device. Gurman previously said in another report that the new Apple TV will be released in the first half of 2024. However, the report does not say whether the camera will be included in this particular model or if it is still far in the future.

Apple TV with camera: what to expect
The report says the Apple TV will support “gesture-based camera control,” but no further details were provided.
With tvOS 17, Apple added FaceTime to TV, which allows users to make video calls using the rear camera of a connected iPhone or iPad. With Apple TV having a built-in camera, users are no longer dependent on an external device.
To display 3D effects, updates like iOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and tvOS 17 introduced new hand gestures that users can access during video calls in FaceTime and other video calling apps.
For example, users can show fireworks with two thumbs up on the screen, or make two peace signs with their hands to show confetti.
Gurman didn’t elaborate on whether this is a special feature or if entirely new gesture-based controls are coming to the Apple TV.
In other home news, he said Apple is also considering creating a “lightweight smart display” that can be used throughout the home.
