The Apple Intelligence feature is the main attraction of the next major iOS update. The iOS 18 update is set to bring several new artificial intelligence (AI) features, but a new report suggests that not all of these features may be available at launch. Apple is reportedly using these AI features to encourage people to buy its next smartphone, which is said to have a negative impact on sales of the iPhone 16 series. It is said that the features associated with ChatGPT will not be available when the stable version of iOS 18 is released.
Apple Intelligence features may be released gradually
Bloomberg’s Mark Garman reports that the Cupertino tech giant plans to gradually roll out Apple Intelligence features. This means that some features will be available with the release of iOS 18, while others may not be available until 2025.
Some analysts are apparently pointing to a “super cycle” for the iPhone 16. Supercycle refers to increased device sales due to the integration of important or in-demand features. Industry veterans are said to believe Apple’s intelligence could have a similar effect on iPhone 16 sales. This means more people will join the iPhone ecosystem or upgrade their existing devices to the iPhone 16 models.
However, Garmin argues that this is unlikely due to Apple’s phased approach to rolling out AI features and lack of major hardware upgrades. The iPhone 16 series is expected to come with features like improved cameras, new processors, and a new shutter button. This means that Apple Intelligence will be the main revenue driver.
Gorman said features like the typing tool, notification aggregation, removing objects from images, and phone transcription will be available with iOS 18, but key features like ChatGPT integration and improved Siri features will be available with iOS 18. Some features will reportedly not be available until later this year or early 2025.
Additionally, Apple Intelligence is not fully available in the EU and China due to national policy restrictions. The report also highlights that most consumers are unfamiliar with AI and may not be as interested in it as iPhone makers hope.
However, it is still too early to say whether Apple Intelligence will help sell the company’s devices. The tech giant will host an “It’s Glowtime” event on Monday where it is expected to officially announce the iPhone 16 series along with other devices. Only when the next iPhone comes out will consumers be able to tell whether they are sold on the idea of artificial intelligence, which may not materialize the moment they take the device out of the box.
