Google and Samsung have announced up to seven generations of Android updates for the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 series, setting the bar high for Android phones.
Apple doesn’t typically disclose the number of software updates for iPhones, but it is known for providing long-term software support for its phones.
Thanks to new UK rules, Apple has finally set a minimum support period for the iPhone 15 family, but it will be shorter than what Google and Samsung currently offer.
Minimum duration of software support for iPhone 15 Pro Max
As Android Authority’s Mishal Rahman noted, Apple recently uploaded a new UK Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) compliant document to its website. In it, Apple states that it will provide security updates for the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max for at least five years.
The “stated support period” is “at least five years from the date of initial publication.” The “first release date” is September 22, 2023. This period is two years shorter than our main competitors.
A “security update” is defined by PSTI as “a software update that protects or improves the security of a product, including software updates that address security issues discovered or reported by the manufacturer.”
Accordingly, Apple is expected to release some devices via will support a longer period of time.
So far, the Cupertino giant has been offering updates for some models for more than five years. The iPhone XS, introduced in September 2018, is still compatible with iOS 17. This software warranty period may change with the release of the iPhone 16 series in the fall.
Samsung and Google now guarantee Android system and security updates for at least seven years for the latest Galaxy S24 and Pixel 8 series.
