Apple has alerted its retail stores and authorized service providers about display cracking issues affecting its new iPhone Duo, which became available on October 23. In a memo obtained by MacRumors, Apple provided guidance for technicians on how to diagnose and handle reports of cracked screens.

According to Apple, the issue impacts a small number of iPhone Duo devices, with complaints surfacing shortly after the phone’s launch. The company stated, “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” and advised users to contact AppleCare for replacements.

Early adopters of the iPhone Duo, which starts at nearly $2,000, reported that the inner screen cracked near the hinge, leaving visible lines on the display. Jesse Dalton, a customer from Texas, recounted his experience where the device broke while simply trying to open it, leading to a loud crack and visible damage.

Some reports suggest that the design of the device’s hinge may contribute to the problem. iFixit, a device repair firm, noted that the inner screen is particularly sensitive and may be contacting the hinge, creating stress points. iFixit’s technician Shahram Mokhtari remarked on the complexity of the hinge mechanism, indicating that even small manufacturing variances could lead to display issues.

Apple has not initiated a recall or public repair program for the affected units, stating that it will replace broken devices under its AppleCare warranty. However, the company has not disclosed the exact number of impacted devices. Some users have faced delays in receiving replacements due to backorders, as reported by Roneshia Smith, whose device cracked within a day of purchase.

These issues haven’t overshadowed positive feedback from early users regarding the phone, especially its multitasking capabilities and media experience. The company is also reportedly working with app developers to optimize applications for the new foldable device.
