Anthropic has disclosed a staggering $131.7 billion in cash and investments in its recent S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, ahead of its planned initial public offering (IPO). This amount places the artificial intelligence company among the highest cash holders in the United States, surpassed only by Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet.

With this financial strength, Anthropic has outstripped major competitors like Amazon, SpaceX, Meta, and Microsoft as of June 30. The company anticipates that its IPO could raise over $100 billion, potentially increasing its cash reserves to more than $230 billion. However, details regarding the offering size remain unspecified and are expected to be revealed shortly.

In addition to its impressive cash figures, Anthropic’s filing includes warnings about the risks associated with AI development. The company has raised concerns about bioweapons, blackmail, and broader threats to humanity. The potential dangers posed by advanced artificial intelligence have prompted significant discussions among stakeholders and analysts. One analyst noted that “the degree of risk in the system” is a crucial issue as the company moves forward.

Despite its high cash reserves, Anthropic faces substantial future obligations, including computing expenses that totaled $8.95 billion in the first half of the year. The company typically secures computing capacity 12 to 18 months in advance, which means current expense figures do not fully reflect its financial commitments. Anthropic disclosed estimated future lease obligations of $321.4 billion and fixed commitments of $265.6 billion, with contracts ranging from one to twenty years.

Following June 30, the company entered into agreements that add approximately $245 billion in minimum future payment obligations. With an aggregate of $141 billion in private financing since its inception, Anthropic’s ability to generate profits and secure funds will be critical in meeting its future commitments.

As Anthropic prepares for its IPO, the interplay between its substantial cash reserves and the inherent risks linked to its technology raises important questions about the future of AI and its impact on society.
