Xiaomi 15 Series Could Feature an In-Display Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor: Report

According to a new report, the Xiaomi 15 could bring users several new improvements compared to its predecessor. The next generation of Xiaomi’s flagship series, which is expected to consist of the vanilla Xiaomi 15, Xiaomi 15 Pro and Xiaomi 15 Ultra models, could ditch the previous generation’s optical fingerprint scanner and feature an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. Recently, another report claimed that this smartphone series could use the yet-to-be-announced 4th generation Snapdragon 8 chipset. Notably, the Xiaomi 14 series, which was launched in China in October 2023, is yet to launch in India.

Tipster Digital Chat Station reported the new development (via GizmoChina), claiming that the Chinese smartphone maker is working on new fingerprint scanner technology. With this move, the company will use ultrasonic sensors under the display on the Xiaomi 15 series. The leak also adds that the brand may use Goodix’s ultrasonic fingerprint recognition technology, which is believed to be cheaper compared to similar sensors from Qualcomm.

Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors emit ultrasonic pulses of sound waves that humans cannot hear. Sound waves hit your finger and return with the information they have collected. The user is recognized by matching the rough pattern and the distance between the rough areas. Compared to optical fingerprint sensors, they have several advantages. This sensor reads the fingerprint in 3D, making it easy to read even with greasy or wet fingers. Also, this method of scanning fingerprints is more secure than optical. It is noteworthy that the use of this technology is limited to a few premium smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Previous reports also suggested that the Xiaomi 15 series could come with the yet-to-be-announced 4th generation Snapdragon 8 chipset. The processor could be unveiled in October 2024 and since the Xiaomi 14 series was launched in China in the same month last year, the Xiaomi 15 series could be the first smartphone to feature this chip.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), a tipster posted information about the 4th generation Snapdragon 8 processor. The leak suggests that the maximum clock speed could reach 4GHz, which is a significant improvement over the 3rd generation Snapdragon 8 chip, which runs at 3.3GHz. It is also expected to be paired with an Adreno 830 GPU.
