WhatsApp is reportedly testing the ‘Imagine’ shortcut that allows users to create AI-powered images. The instant messaging app has reportedly been testing artificial intelligence (AI) features such as AI-generated profile pictures and stickers for some time. As part of its AI efforts, Meta introduced a chat assistant called Meta AI in its apps, including WhatsApp, in some regions in 2023, providing users with conversation and image generation capabilities.

Images with artificial intelligence on WhatsApp
According to a report by WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, a shortcut for the instant messaging platform’s image generation feature has been discovered in the beta version of WhatsApp version 2.24.12.4 for Android. It allows users to use MetaAI to quickly generate artificial intelligence-based images in the app.
Notably, Meta AI currently has an image generation feature, but it is only accessible via a text message with the tag “@Meta AI” to the AI chatbot in a group chat. It is speculated that this rumored feature could enable rapid image generation for those who frequently communicate through AI images.
As you can see in the screenshot, a new shortcut called Imagine appears in the attached options, which allows you to invoke the artificial intelligence meta-image generation feature. This is supposedly included in the beta version of WhatsApp.
The report also suggests that it may only be available to users who already have Meta AI. This chatbot is currently only available in a few countries including the US, Australia, Canada, South Africa, etc. However, Meta is testing a WhatsApp chatbot in India too. The report also shows that quick image generation via shortcuts is still under development and is not available to WhatsApp for Android beta testers. It is expected to be introduced to a larger audience in the future.
More artificial intelligence features in WhatsApp
Instant messaging platform Meta is also testing an AI-powered profile picture feature that will reportedly allow users to create AI profile pictures. According to the report, users will be asked to enter a description of the image they want to create on a new page titled “Create AI profile picture.” The report then creates a custom photo that matches the description provided. This feature was discovered in WhatsApp for Android app version 2.24.11.17.
