Mnuchin, who is also the U.S. President’s special envoy, is meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, who is heading the Chinese side.
The talks, which run until Friday, are focused on the root cause of the strained trade relations between the world’s two largest economies. The meetings are expected to find a solution to the ongoing tit-for-tat punitive tariffs.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said earlier that China welcomes talks, but the outcome must benefit both sides.
