Tragic Stampede at Ashok Dham Temple Claims Lives in Bihar

Udaipur, August 17: A tragic incident occurred near the famous Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar, on the Monday of Sawan, resulting in the death of at least seven devotees and injuries to around ten others. The injured have been sent to hospitals for treatment.

Following the incident, local administration and relief teams have been activated at the site. Reports indicate that a large number of devotees had gathered at the temple due to the Sawan festival when a power pole fell. This led to a rumor of an electrical current spreading, causing panic among the crowd and resulting in a stampede.

The actual cause of the incident is currently under investigation. Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar stated that administrative officials were present at the site from around 3:30 PM to manage the crowd. He noted that the number of devotees unexpectedly surged due to the halt of two trains between 6:30 PM and 6:45 PM.

The DM confirmed that ambulances were pre-arranged by the police and health department, including Toto and bike ambulances. Around 6:40 PM, a section of the barricading broke as the crowd surged towards the fields, causing people to fall over each other. The administration promptly dispatched about ten individuals to the hospital via ambulance.

Addressing questions regarding the presence of administration officials, the DM emphasized that the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and other officials were on-site. He mentioned that the Civil Surgeon was personally overseeing the treatment of the injured and that a medical team was actively engaged in providing care.

SDPO Shivam Kumar confirmed the deaths of seven devotees and reiterated that the stampede was triggered by the rumor of an electrical shock following the falling power pole. He stated that the true cause of the incident would be clarified after a thorough investigation. He also noted that the stampede occurred outside the temple premises, and the situation has since normalized, allowing devotees to peacefully perform rituals at the temple. The administration is conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the entire incident.
