Chennai, June 9: BJP leader and former Governor of Telangana, Tamilisai Soundararajan, has urged the Tamil Nadu government to enhance welfare measures for senior citizens following the alleged suicides of three elderly individuals in Namakkal district. Reports suggest that the suicides were attributed to old age, loneliness, and lack of support.
Describing the incident as deeply tragic, Tamilisai highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive support system for elderly individuals living without adequate family or social care. She appealed to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to identify vulnerable, isolated senior citizens and ensure they receive the necessary assistance for a dignified life.
According to her, the state government should establish provisions for safe shelter, nutritious food, timely healthcare, and emotional support for such individuals. She emphasized that immediate intervention is essential to prevent such incidents and address the challenges faced by the aging population.
Tamilisai stated that the government must take this incident seriously and provide aid to those affected and at risk. She further called for strengthening welfare arrangements for senior citizens across Tamil Nadu.
Highlighting welfare initiatives launched by the central government, Tamilisai reminded that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana to ensure food security for vulnerable sections of society during unprecedented crises. She noted that this scheme played a crucial role in preventing hunger among poor families during the lockdown.
She also pointed to steps taken by the central government to improve health security for senior citizens, including expanding health insurance coverage for those aged 70 and above. She stated that such initiatives underline the importance of creating a robust safety net for the elderly.
Tamilisai Soundararajan concluded by asserting that caring for senior citizens is not only the responsibility of governments but also a moral obligation of society. She emphasized that the true measure of humanity lies in how people treat and care for their elders.
