New Delhi, October 23 (Udaipur Kiran) — After a disappointing performance in the first ODI at Perth, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma bounced back in style, scoring a composed half-century against Australia in the second ODI at Adelaide. This knock marked his 59th ODI fifty, reaffirming his class and consistency at the top of the order.
Rohit reached his fifty off 74 balls, guiding India out of early trouble after a shaky start. Making a return to ODI cricket after a long break, Rohit last featured for India in the Champions Trophy final on March 9, 2025, where he had scored 76 runs against New Zealand in Dubai.
With this innings, Rohit also surpassed former captain Sourav Ganguly’s record for most runs as an opener in One-Day Internationals. Ganguly had scored 9,146 runs in 236 innings, while Rohit has now accumulated 9,219 runs in 186 innings as an opener — the second-highest by any Indian after Sachin Tendulkar.
Batting first after losing the toss, India’s start was poor. Shubman Gill was dismissed early for 9 runs off 9 balls, while Virat Kohli fell for a duck, marking his second consecutive zero in the series.
Rohit then steadied the innings with Shreyas Iyer, adding a crucial 118-run partnership for the third wicket. He eventually fell after scoring 73 runs off 97 balls, hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes.
India, having lost the opening match by seven wickets (DLS method) in Perth, are aiming to level the series with a win in Adelaide. The final ODI between India and Australia will be played on October 25 in Sydney.
