New Delhi, April 26 (Udaipur Kiran): India’s hatchback segment saw dominant performance in FY2026, with Maruti Suzuki capturing half of the top-10 list. The top three models alone recorded a combined sales figure of 538,044 units, each crossing the 1 lakh mark.
The three best-selling hatchbacks were Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, and Maruti Suzuki Baleno, with starting ex-showroom prices beginning at Rs 4,98,900.
Strong Sales Performance
The Swift led the segment with 185,350 units sold in March 2026, registering a 3% year-on-year growth. WagonR followed with 180,134 units, witnessing a 9% decline, while Baleno secured third place with 172,560 units, also growing by 3% year-on-year.
Swift: Engine and Features
The Swift comes with a new Z-series 1.2L three-cylinder petrol engine delivering 80 bhp and 112 Nm torque. It is paired with a mild hybrid setup and offers both 5-speed manual and AMT options. The claimed mileage stands at 24.80 kmpl (manual), 25.75 kmpl (automatic), and 32.85 km/kg (CNG).
The model features a redesigned cabin with rear AC vents, wireless charging, dual charging ports, rear-view camera, and a 9-inch infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Safety features include six airbags, ESP, hill hold control, ABS with EBD, and cruise control. The starting price is Rs 5,78,900.
WagonR: Practical and Efficient
The WagonR is equipped with a 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engine option. The 1.0-litre variant offers a claimed mileage of 25.19 kmpl, while the CNG version delivers 34.05 km/kg. The 1.2-litre engine provides up to 24.43 kmpl.
Key features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, cloud-based services, six airbags, reverse parking sensors, and hill-hold assist in AMT variants. Its starting price is Rs 4,98,900.
Baleno: Premium Hatchback Appeal
The Baleno comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing up to 90 bhp, along with manual and automatic transmission options. The CNG variant produces 78 PS and 99 Nm torque.
It offers a premium interior with a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, 360-degree camera, redesigned AC vents, and wireless connectivity. Safety features include six airbags, ESP, hill-start assist, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts, and rear parking sensors. The model has received a 4-star safety rating in Bharat NCAP. Its starting price is Rs 5,98,900.
