Waterways workers strike called off in Bangladesh

Waterways transport workers had gone on indefinite strike since midnight Friday in support of their 11 point charter of demands which includes implementation of wage scale announced in 2016, providing appointment letter, ID cards and service books, food allowance, ensuring social safety of workers and providing a compensation of Tk 10 lakh to a worker in case of his death while on duty.

According to the spokesperson of the Labour Ministry, government will implement the demand for food allowance for transport workers from March next year. The government also agreed to include the workers’ appointment letter, identity card and service book in an annual survey checklist related to the operation of the waterways transport services.

Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation (BWTWF) alleged that the owners of waterways transport services promise to fulfil their demands but it’s never implemented by them.
