Lucknow, May 23 (Udaipur Kiran) The myth has exploded. The Mahagathbandhan in Uttar Pradesh has failed to cause a major damage to the BJP. It was said by most of the non-BJP parties that it will wipe out the BJP and touted as the most powerful political force. Projected to win most of the seats, there were many in the opposition who believed that the BJP will be left with only ten or fifteen seats and prevented from forming government at the Centre.
Nothing of this kind happened. The BJP could win more than 75 per cent of the seats. The Congress had the worst fate.It lost Amethi which was its bastion.Party president Rahul Gandhi could save his face by victory in remote Kerala.
Smriti Irani who was defeated by a big margin by Rahul in 2014 took her revenge and defeated him by overr 40,000 votes. He had conceded defeat before the result was officially declared.
The Samajwadi Party which was one of the alliance partners made a minor gain. The real beneficiary was the BSP which had nothing to lose in this general election.
The party had drawn a blank in the previous poll and was looking for a massive win.It had to settle for a small number. It can have the satisfaction of not losing all the contested seats (38).
This election will be noted for a few more developments. The Mulayam Singh Yadav family was divided and his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav stood against his nephew Akshay Yadav in Firozabad. He could win but he indirectly helped the BJP in wresting the seat from the SP.
The mood in the BJP is upbeat for this and another reason. The party had lost three seats in by-elections last year. All these seats,Phulpur,Gorakhpur and Kairana were taken away from the BJP by the opposition. The BSP and the SP had come together for the first time before these elections and that had paid.
The BJP was preparing all these months to take them back.It has succeeded, rubbing salt to the wound. The party had fielded four cabinet ministers to foil the alliance plan. This has also played a part in spoiling the opposition plan.
