After CBI taking over the probe in the Unnao rape and accident case, it was the turn of the Supreme Court on Thursday to order swift action.
The apex Court directed the transfer of all five cases registered in connection with the Unnao rape incident from a court in Uttar Pradesh to a court in the national capital. CBI trial court will hear the case on day to day basis.
The apex court said that the trial must be completed in 45 days. It also directed the CBI to complete the investigation of the fifth case relating to the accident in which the woman and her lawyer have been critically injured, within seven days.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi made it clear that the agency can only seek extension of time for probe in the accident case in exceptional circumstances. In another direction, the apex court also directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide Rs 25 lakh to the rape survivor as an interim compensation.
Earlier in the day, Supreme Court asked a senior CBI official to present a progress report on the case by noon. Responding to this Solicitor General sought time till Friday 10.30 pleading that concerned officers are in Lucknow.
CJI turned down this request. Consequently, Joint Director CBI Sampat Meena appeared before the Court and shared the progress made in the investigations so far. Solicitor General informed the Court that the Chargesheet against accused is pending.
He shared details of FIR as well as the fact that the victim’s father died in jail after he was beaten by other inmates.
The victim’s father had been arrested in a case related to Arms Act. SG Tushar Mehta appearing for CBI said that agency need one month’s time to give a report. But the CJI insisted the probe agency do so in 7 days.
Meanwhile, DGP of UP has said that the security lapse that led to the deadly accident is being probed and 3 security officers have been suspended.
A CBI team visited King George’s Medical University hospital where the victim is undergoing treatment and took a status report about the condition of the victim and her lawyer. The media incharge of KGMU said that both the victim and her lawyer have been succesfully weaned off the ventilator for a few hours.
UP Women’s Commission chief also visited KGMU. She said that UP government stands by the victim.
On another front after massive public outrage across the nation, BJP expelled MLA Kuldeep Sengar, accused of raping a minor girl from Unnao two years ago and killing two members of her family. Sengar is currently in jail.
The Supreme Court will decide on Friday after consultations with doctors as well as the victim’s family whether she and her lawyer should be shifted to Delhi or not.
