Many parts of the State including Chennai received steady rain leaving several of the bus routes in the city waterlogged and throwing traffic out of gear.
In Tirunelveli district, officials issued warning to people living in low lying areas close to Thamirabarani river as outflow from Papanasam and Servalar dams increased on Saturday.
Heavy rain in the Western Ghats and other parts of Tirunelveli district resulted in good inflow.
Tourists and public were advised not to venture into the river and its distributaries. The Veeranam lake in Cuddalore district which supplies water to Chennai city is also near full.
Meanwhile,the Union Water Resources Ministry has advised the state government to maintain round-the-clock vigil in all dams, especially small and medium ones, in all river basins.
The Ministry’s advisory comes in the wake of IMD’s forecast of widespread heavy rainfall in the next two days in the Kosasthalaiyar, Adyar, Ponnaiyar and Vellar basins.
