SC directs Centre to Fund Set-up of Special Courts

The court directed that the courts should be set up within 60 days. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has been asked to file a progress report in four weeks.

The special courts will try the pending cases of sexual assault on children under the POCSO Act. The court said it would take up the matter again on September 26.

This comes a day after the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the bill for amending the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2019 provides for stringent punishment including life imprisonment for using children for pornographic purposes.
