Following the development, U.S. President Donald Trump has said that there were many options short of war with Iran. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said after arriving in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday that it was an “act of war”. Meanwhile, U.N. officials monitoring sanctions on Iran and Yemen will also visit Saudi Arabia to investigate. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that a major confrontation in the Gulf would have “devastating consequences” for the region and globally.
In another development, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani may cancel his trip to New York next week for the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations if the United States fails to issue visas for him and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. UN Chief has expressed hope that the issue will be resolved at the earliest.
