President’s Rule imposed in Maharashtra following Governor’s report

President’s Rule has been imposed in Maharashtra after political parties failed to garner support to from govt in the state. President Ram Nath Kovind, gave his assent  for imposition of president’s rule in this regard this evening. The Union Cabinet met in New Delhi to discuss the political situation in the State based on the Governor’s report and recommended the President’s Rule in Maharashtra.

A statement from Raj Bhavan said: “Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari having been satisfied that as Govt of Maharashtra cannot be carried on in accordance with the Constitution, has submitted a report as contemplated by the provisions of Article 356 of Constitution (President’s Rule).” 

Amid political uncertainty in Maharashtra, A group of senior congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, K C Venugopal and Ahmad Patel has reached Mumbai.They will meet Nationalist Congress Party Chief Sharad Pawar.

Meanwhile Congress leader  Ashok Chavan has said that Congress stands united with NCP in Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena has filed petition in Supreme Court challenging Maharashtra Governor’s decision to not extend the time given to the party to prove their ability to form government. Advocate Sunil Fernandez has filed the plea for Shiv Sena.
