Addressing the event to release election manifesto of his younger brother and candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Friday, he said that parliamentary elections should be immediately called if Gotabaya emerges victorious.
Sri Lanka People’s party (SLPP) has already declared that Mahinda Rajapkasa will be their prime ministerial candidate.
The former President is barred from contesting presidential elections because of the two-term limit put up by nineteenth amendment to the constitution.
The amendment has also brought four and half year limit before which parliament cannot be dissolved by President.
Parliament completes its four and half year in February next year and can only be dissolved before that by a motion supported by two third of members.
SLPP has also said that victory of their candidate will mean that the present government under Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has lost the mandate to rule and should resign.
Gotabaya main rival is minister Sajith Premadasa among 35 candidates in fray for elections scheduled for 16th of next month.
