Political activities gain momentum in poll bound Maharashtra, Haryana

Shiv Sena leader Aditya Thackeray filed his nomination papers from the Worli seat for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra.

He also held a mega show of strength before filing nomination papers.

Aditya is the first in his family to contest elections since his grandfather Bal Thackeray founded the party. The Shiv Sena is contesting elections in an agreement with the BJP. The BJP has so far released the list of 139 candidates.

Nitesh Rane, former Congress MLA and son of former Maharashtra chief minister Narayan Rane on Thursday joined the BJP and will contest the October 21 state Assembly polls from Kankavli seat in coastal Konkan.

Nitesh won the 2014 Assembly polls from Kankavli seat in Sindhudurg district on Congress’ ticket by defeating the then BJP MLA Pramod Jathar. Narayan Rane, who founded the Maharashtra Swabhiman Party in 2017 after parting ways with the Congress, has spoken of merging the outfit.

The BJP has so far released the list of 139 candidates. Congress also released its third list of 20 candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls.

With this, the party has so far announced the names of 123 candidates, with 51 in the first list and 52 in the second. 

The elections for the 288-member House in Maharashtra will be held on October 21 and results will be out on October 24.

The Cong and the Nationalist Congress Party are contesting the election together under a pre-poll alliance. NCP also released first list for Maharashtra elections. Congress party late Wednesday night released its list for 84 candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, fielding all its sitting MLAs except one.

Former chief minister Bhupinder Hooda will contest from his Garhi Sampla-Kiloi seat, while the party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala will contest from his Kaithal Assembly constituency.

Out of the 17 sitting MLAs in the Haryana Assembly, the party fielded 16, barring Renuka Vishnoi who represented the Hansi constituency. With filing of nominations closing on Friday, the BJP is the only party to have announced candidates for all seats.

In both the states, polls will be held on October 21 and results will be declared on October 24.
