PM Narendra Modi to visit Sri Lanka today

Prime Minister’s visit is mainly aimed at expressing solidarity with victims of Easter Sunday attacks and to reaffirm his Neighborhood first policy. He will be accompanied by a high level delegation including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale.

PM  Modi will have an official one to one meeting with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime minister Ranil Wickremsinghe. The latter is scheduled to receive and see off PM Modi at the airport, signifying the close ties between the two neighbours and importance attached by SrI Lanka to this visit. 

PM Modi is likely to visit one of the site of Easter attacks which killed 258 people including 45 foreigners. Prime Minister will receive a ceremonial reception followed by lunch where all cabinet ministers and provincial governors will be present.

Leader of opposition Mahinda Rajapaksa and Tamil leader R A Sampanthan will call on Prime Minister during his stay. PM Modi will also meet and greet Indian community staying in Sri Lanka before departing in the afternoon. 

The focus of discussions with Sri Lankan leadership will center around cooperation in Indian ocean region, economic and  development assistance and further strengthening of close ties between the two neighbours.

Security is tight in capital Colombo and special traffic plan are in place to ensure ease of movement. Several landmarks in the city have been decorated with national flags of both countries and billboards to welcome PM Modi. PM Modi has made two visits to Sri Lanka during his first term and has stressed upon close economic and strategic cooperation between the two neighbours.
