NRC Assam issue sends political temperatures soaring

The BJP accused Congress of adopting different stands in govt and opposition while emphasising that the soul of Assam Accord signed by then PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 is in NRC. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has asked the Centre to place before it an SOP to deal with claims of those excluded from NRC on August 16.

Rajya Sabha proceedings were disrupted for the second consecutive day on Tuesday over the issue of publication of the second and final draft of National Register of Citizens. But before chaos dominated the proceedings, there was a discussion on the issue in the Upper House, where opposition parties and treasury benches articulated their positions on the issue. The discussion saw Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad expressing concern over the families affected by the NRC terming it a matter related to 1.5 crore families. But BJP President Amit Shah led the charge for the ruling side saying it was former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who signed the Assam Accord and NRC was part and parcel of it.
