Nepal’s Lower house of Parliament express grief over loss of lives and property in floods and landslides

The house unanimously adopted a special resolution on Wednesday condoling the deaths and urged the government to effectively carry out relief, rescue and rehabilitation work in the affected areas. 

Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara also announced that all membershave decided to contribute their one day’s salary to the relief fund. 

Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa informed the house that so far 108 persons lost their lives in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in recent weeks. He said 33 people are still missing.

Ram Bahadur Thapa said that normal life in 35 districts had been affected and thousands of houses damaged.

Home Minister also informed the house that efforts are on to hold bilateral talks with India on the floods caused by embankments in the bordering area.

Earlier, participating in the discussion lawmakers form ruling and opposition parties urged the government to provide adequate relief andrehabilitation to affected people.

They also demanded lasting solution for perennial problem of flooding and inundation in Tarai region.
