Nirmala Sitharaman took charge of her new responsibility as the NAtion’s Finance Minister on Friday. After an impeccable track record as minister of Commerce and Defence in earlier govt, she has been promoted to handle the extremely important assignment. Her immediate focus would be the General Budget where in she will be tasked to strike a balance between augmenting growth and upping the govt’s welfare spending on social sector schemes.
Nearly 16 months after he retired as the top diplomat of India, former foreign secretary S Jaishankar took over the charge as the Minister for external affairs. A 1977-batch IFS officer, Jaishankar played a key role in resolving the crisis following the incursion in Ladakh’s Depsang and the Doklam stand-off, handling the tough negotiations with Beijing Union minister for Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar also took charge on Friday.
He highlighted the important role played by Media in a democracy, reiterating the commitment of the Government towards a free press. He also talked about the importance of freedom of speech and expression which is an important part of the democratic ethos of the country.
Continuing with his earlier mission of making Railways safe, secure and swift, Union minister Piyush Goyal took charge of the ministry of Railways. He also took charge as Commerce & Industry Minister.
He said that he is extremely humbled by stepping into the shoes of a visionary like former minister Suresh Prabhu and will try to do his best to take the work of the Ministry forward.
