Massive fire at Baghdara nature park in Udaipur

Udaipur : After hours in action, fire fighters and rescue team managed to control a massive fire that engulfed Baghdara nature park near Umarda, some 15 kilometers away from Udaipur city. The incident took place on Monday afternoon when flames from a nearby field spread speedily to the nature park due to strong winds. The park sprawls in some 350 hectares area and is famous for crocodile breeding. Large number of leopards, chinkara, deer, wild boar are seen here.

On Monday afternoon, some 50 to 60 hectares of the park were caught under fire creating chaos and panic in the area. The situation grew tensed as there was a gunpowder godown belonging to the Rajasthan State Mines and Minerals Ltd (RSMML)situated  some miles away from the park. Some  20 firefighting vehicles were pressed into service and rescue teams worked unstoppably for hours to douse the flames. The RSMML teams too embarked on the task to shift the gunpowder stock that was estimated around 300 tonnes. The flames were doused before they spread near the godown area thus averting a severe situation, police said. Around 3 am on Tuesday, the flames subsided completely. “ Forest fire is a common incident. Perhaps there had been some fire in a nearby field and due to strong winds the flames spread to the park. It was only a ground fire hence no casualties have been reported. The animals and trees are completely safe due to the timely intervention” Rahul Bhatnagar, chief conservator of forest said.
