Hundreds of scholars, doctors, engineers, artists, teachers and other eminent personalities were massacred in Dhaka on this day in 1971. They were dragged out of their homes and brutally murdered by the Pakistan army and their collaborators in Bangladesh.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to the martyred intellectuals by placing wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur in Dhaka.
President Hamid, in his message hoped that the country will fulfill their dreams. Prime Minister Hasina, in her message, said the nation will remember their sacrifices with deep respect.
Various programmes were organized across Dhaka and other cities of Bangladesh to mark the solemn occasion. Television channels broadcast special programme to highlight the significance of the occasion.
Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of High Commission of India also organized a music and poetry programe in Dhaka to commemorate the Martyred Intellectuals Day.
Eminent poet Syed Al Farooque and singer Nahid Nazia rendered the music poetry performance to pay tribute on this solemn occasion. High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das felicitated the artists.
