Maldives has said that Indian Armed Forces make an important contribution towards enhancing the readiness and capacity of the Maldivian security forces. This was stated by Maldives minister of foreign affairs Abdulla Shahid during his meeting today in Male with army chief General Bipin Rawat, who is on a six-day visit to Maldives.
The Minister stated that India plays a vital role in capacity building for armed forces of Maldives and is a close partner in keeping the Indian Ocean a conflict-free region. During the meeting, discussions were held on the significance of considering the evolving nature of threats in the current world as well as multi-faceted nature of the relationship between Maldives and India.
Earlier, the army chief had met Maldives defence minister Mariya Didi and chief of Maldives defence forces to discuss and further strengthen defence cooperation between the two nations. He will also be meeting with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and other cabinet ministers during his stay. The army chief is also scheduled to visit the composite training center, developed in Maafilaafushi under Indian grant assistance.
