While police confirmed the death of one person, fire brigade personnel engaged in the rescue work said 25 injured were pulled out from the rubble.
President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his concern in a tweet. He said: Sorry to learn of the partial collapse of the Majerhat bridge in Kolkata. Thoughts and prayers with the bereaved families, and with those injured in the tragic incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and said he hoped for the speedy recovery of the injured.
West Bengal Governor who took stock of the situation expressed grief over the incident and said that a probe would be instituted.

The state BJP on its part has slammed the negligence of the TMC govt in the state for the disaster.
Train movement was temporarily suspended on the Majerhat road after the bridge collapse .The Railway Ministry, however, said the maintenance of the collapsed portion of the bridge was not under railway jurisdiction.
Rescue operations are still on while the injured have been admitted to SSKM and CMRI hospitals.
