Lok Sabha passes Arms (Amendment) Bill

It seeks to reduce the number of licensed arms per person and to increase the quantum of penalties for violations of the law.

Replying to the discussion on the bill, Home Minister Amit Shah rejected allegations that it is aimed at appropriating the powers of the States.

He said fire arms is in the Union List and the State governments have only limited jurisdiction relating to ammunition. He also listed out the enhancement in the quantum of punishment for illegal manufacture, import or export, possession or buying and selling without permission of firearms.

He observed that celebratory firing has become a big menace. He said it has claimed more than a hundred lives, adding that a jail term would be handed over to celebratory firing as well.
