As the Lok Sabha session enters Day 2 on Tuesday, BJP will be appointing MP Om Birla,57, who has been MLA from Kota, Rajasthan thrice and MP twice,as the Speaker of the Lower House.

BJP MP will be the Speaker for the 17th Lok Sabha that began its session on Monday, replacing previous Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who did not contest the current Lok Sabha elections. Once nominated, BJP MP Om Birla, who won from Kota-Bundi parliamentary seat in Rajasthan, will easily become the Speaker as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a clear majority in the parliament.

President Ram Nath Kovind swore in seven-term member of Parliament Virendra Kumar as the protem Speaker of Lok Sabha who administered the oath of office to over 300 MPs on Monday. As soon as the new Speaker is appointed, Virendra Kumar’s role will cease to exist.

Usually, seniority is considered for Lok Sabha speaker’s post but there have been instances when first-time and second-time lawmakers were elected for the chair.
