Israel’s election ends in political deadlock

With 64% of votes counted, the Blue and White Party, led by Benny Gantz, appears to have won 33 of the 120 seats in the Knesset, which is one more than Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud won.

The results indicate that both men will struggle to form a majority coalition with smaller parties.

Netanyahu, who became Israel’s longest-serving prime minister in July, has been in office for three consecutive terms since 2009.
