Closing ceremony of 18th Asian Games will be held in Jakarta today. Women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal has been named India’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony of the Asian Games 2018.
India ended their Asian Games campaign with a total of 69 medals, including 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze medals. With this medal haul at the 2018 Games, India surpassed their highest Asian Games tally of 65 medals at the 2010 Guangzhou edition.
On day 14 of the Asian Games India added 2 gold medals in its tally, to record their highest ever medal haul at the Asian Games. Boxer Amit Panghal got past the Olympic Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov to win a gold medal in men’s 49kg category. In a tough final bout, the 22-year-old Indian boxer didn’t get bogged down and kept landing his punches even as the Uzbek tried to overpower him. Panghal was the lone Indian boxer to make the final in the ongoing edition in Indonesia and he ensured a golden end to the campaign.
Pranab Bardhan and Shibnath Sarkar won gold medal in the men’s pair event in bridge. Bardhan is the oldest gold medalist at the 2018 Asian Games.
For the second consecutive edition, India finished with the silver medal in the women’s team squash at the Asian Games after defeat to Hong Kong in the final. Sunayna Kuruvilla lost to Tze Lok Ho in the first game of the tie and Joshna Chinappa went down in straight games as Hong Kong’s no 1 Annie Au, as India lost the final 2-0.
Defending champions India put behind the disappointment of missing out on the final to beat Pakistan 2-1 and clinch the men’s hockey bronze medal. The Indians were nowhere near her fluent best but found the net through Akashdeep Singh (3rd minute) and Harmanpreet Singh (50th minute) to ensure that they at least finished on the podium after Malaysia surprised them in the semi-final in a penalty shootout. Pakistan pulled one back in the 52nd minute through Mohammad Atiq but could not find the equaliser.
More than 10,000 athletes gave their best at the Asian Games 2018, winning medals for their respective countries. 465 gold medals were won by the athletes of 28 countries. 37 out of 45 participating nations were able to win medals at the Asian Games 2018. China finished on top of the medal tally with 132 gold medals.
