Indian Charge d’ Affaires meets Kulbhushan Jadhav in Pakistan

Indian Charge d’ Affaires, Gaurav Ahluwalia, met Jadhav in Pakistan.

India hopes that Pakistan will ensure right atmosphere so that the meeting is free, fair, meaningful and effective in keeping with the letter and spirit of the ICJ orders.

Jadhav is a former naval officer who has been sentenced to death by a Pakistan court allegedly for “espionage and terrorism”.

A tweet from Pakistan’s foreign office said India will be given consular access to him on Monday “in line with Vienna Convention on Consular relations, ICJ judgement & the laws of Pakistan”.

This is the first time that 49-year-old Kulbhushan Jadhav — sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court in April 2017 — will be given consular access.

After repeated requests to Islamabad, India flagged the matter to the International Court of Justice in the Hague, which was also hearing New Delhi’s appeal for the cancellation of his death sentence.
