This day marks 20 years since India achieved victory in the 1999 Kargil war and forced Pakistan troops to retreat from our land. To commemorate the victory and memory of valiant soldiers, 26 July is celebrated as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’. President Ram Nath Kovind, paid homage to the bravehearts at the Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar after inclement weather prevented him from going to Drass.
At the Kargil war memorial in Drass, Army Chief, General Bipin Singh Rawat honoured the families of the martyred soldiers. In a stern warning to Pakistan he said that world knows that it shelters terrorists.
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu led Rajya Sabha in paying tributes to the heroes of the Kargil war. He said that the nation will never forget their sacrifice.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared a video as a tribute to the Kargil war heroes.
He also shared few pictures from his interactions with the soldiers deployed in Kargil in 1999. He had gone to Kargil in a show solidarity with the brave soldiers.
At that time he was working for the BJP in J&K as well as Himachal Pradesh.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid his respects to the Kargil martyrs at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. Later in Lok Sabha too, he hailed the sacrifice of Kargil martyrs.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a tweet said that the ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’, is a symbol of India’s valour and courage.
Both houses of the Parliament observed a moment of silence as a symbol of respect to the heroes we lost during the Kargil war.
On the 20th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, various parts of the nation celebrated the occasion and remembered the heroes of the war.
The valour and sacrifice of Kargil heroes was also celebrated in Imphal, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Vijaywada. In Imphal, a special program was organised by the Assam Rifles and the State government to commemorate the event. The Eastern Command Army Headquarters in Kolkata also held a special program to mark Vijay Diwas. The Indian Air Force training centre in Bengaluru organised a program in view of the anniversary.
Remembering their son, Captain Sourav Kalia’s parents paid tribute to all the bravehearts who laid down their lives in the war.
Over 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the 1999 Kargil battle to save our motherland. It was only because of the courage and valour of our soldiers that Pakistan failed to execute its dastardly intentions. Today as we mark 20 years of achieving victory at Kargil, the nation remembers its heroes and their greatest sacrifice for the service of our motherland.
