Higher voter turnout in final phase of elections in UP

Lucknow,May 19(Udaipur Kiran)There was a higher voter turnout  in the final phase of Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

Barring some minor incidents polling was peaceful in all the 13 constituencies which went  to polls.The average worked out to 57 per cent of the total till six pm. Maharajganj topped the list with over 62 per cent voting.At the bottom was Ballia with 52 per cent. Voting percentage averaged 54 in 2014.

Votes in 67  constituencies were cast in six other phases.Voting time was cut short by two hours in one of the constituencies–Robertsganj–due to apprehension of violence.The area is naxalite-affected.Polling ended in this constituency at four p m.

Fate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and two other Union ministers,Manoj Sinha and Anupriya Patel ,was decided in this phase.

There were 171 contestants for these seats.Voters numbered 2.32 crores ,1.26 crore males and 1.06 females,in these constituencies.

Nearly 26 ,000  polling booths were set up  across these constituencies.

While Modi was seeking re-election from Varanasi,Manoj and Anupriya  from Ghazipur and Mirzapur,respectively.

All these seats were won by the BJP and its ally in 2014.Twelve of them were bagged by the BJP. The Apna Dal had captured the remaining one. Anupriya Patel was the winner from Mirzapur.

The SP and the BSP which have joined hands this year had fought separately then.They had won none of these seats.Out of the total 80 seats  only seven were won by the opposition.

The Lok Sabha constituencies where votes were cast on Sunday were:Maharajganj,Gorakhpur,Kushinagar,Deoria,Bansgaon,Ghosi,Salempur,Balia,Ghazipur,Chandauli,Varanasi,
Mirzapur and Robertsganj.

Votes will be counted on May 23 and results declared the same day.
