High-stakes G20 opens with trade tensions looming

Issues related to bruising US-China trade war, geopolitical tensions, and climate change are high on the agenda this year.

Focus areas from India’s perspective are corruption and fugitive economic offenders as well as tackling terrorism.

Negotiations are on to include a strong paragraph on the issue of corruption in the Osaka declaration.

All eyes are on whether US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping can reach a truce in a dispute that has been hugely damaging for the world economy.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed pleasure in hosting G20 summit in the Reiwa era. Speaking at the informal meeting, he urged the leaders to work with the spirit of Osaka which is progressive.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged members not to remain secluded while developing one’s country. He also said that there was need to fully accommodate the difficulties faced by the developing countries to avoid new divide.

United States President Donald Trump who is at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan said that while expanding digital trade is important, the security of the 5G networks is equally essential.

Trump was addressing a session on digital economy where he emphasised on the importance of privacy and security in a digital economy.
