Gujarat court sentences Hardik Patel and two aides to two years in jail

Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel and two others have been sentenced to 2 years behind bars by a Gujarat court. The prison terms are linked to a case of rioting and arson in Visnagar town in July 2015.

Hardik was held guilty along with Lalji Patel and A K Patel by a sessions court under IPC sections related to rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful assembly.

Apart from 2-year jail terms, all 3 convicts have also been fined 50,000 rupees each. 14 other co-accused were acquitted for lack of evidence. After sentencing, the judge also granted bail to the 3 convicts.

The Visnagar case is one among several similar cases against Patel filed in the wake of the violent Patidar quota agitation.
