Govt selling onion at subsidised rate as price shoots up in Bangladesh

The number of sales counter operated by the commerce ministry in Dhaka has been increased from  16 to 35 to mitigate the problems of the consumers. Bangladesh has also imported onion from Myanmar. 

Commerce Secretary Md. Jafar Uddin on Monday assured the people that there was no need to panic as adequate stock of onion is available and the import has also been ramped up. He also warned of strict action against business establishments which indulge in hoarding of onions for profiteering.

Onion prices have reported a sharp increase across Bangladesh. In Dhaka it was selling at Tk 100-120 per kilogram today. Bangladesh has a demand of about 24 lakh tonnes of onion per year out of which 11 lakh tonne is imported.
