Udaipur : Four workers died on Wednesday after they were electrocuted while working to connect some perpendicular lines with the main sewer line in Manwa Kheda area under Hiran Magri police station limits of the city. According to the police , the workers perhaps came in contact with an underground cable of a 11 KV high power line supplying electricity in the area which had not been turned off during the ongoing task. The men worked for a local company which had the sewer line contract under the Udaipur Smart City Project. “The possibility of deaths due to asphyxiation too cannot be ruled out as there were frothing at the mouths. The rescue teams did not find any safety gears like helmets, boots or mask on their bodies” Udaipur SP Kailash Chandra Bishnoi told Udaipur Kiran.
According to witnesses at the scene, initially two workers got down to check the sewer connection but they sustained electric shock. Hearing their cries, two others who went down to save them, too were apparently electrocuted. Workers and public watched in horror as they waited for the civil defense rescue teams to arrive and pull out the men. Emergency crews arriving at the scene had to wait for representatives of the electricity department to cut power supply in the area before being allowed to rush in and tend to the victims. By the time they were able to make it to them, all four had already died.
The bodies were transported to the mortuary and relatives were informed. “The exact reason for deaths would be known only once the autopsies are held and detailed report is received. A more thorough investigation of the events would be held that led up to the workers deaths. As per the details available, Udaipur Smart City Limited is the executing agency for the project and they had sublet the sewer laying work to another company.
The contractor is the one directly responsible for flouting the safety rules as he should have ensured that the power supply line is shut down before letting the workers step inside the sewer hole” the SP said. He also said that an FIR would be registered after taking complaint from the victims relatives. “An FIR would be registered under section 304 (culpable homicide) and other relevant sections of accidental death. Investigation would reveal whether the officials of the Udaipur Smart City Limited too are responsible for the deaths” he added. Work at the site has been stopped till further orders.
