Egypt’s Former President Mohammed Morsi buried in Cairo

Rights groups have called for an independent and transparent probe into the detention conditions and death of the former leader. Human Rights Watch echoed the demand, saying Morsi had suffered years of insufficient access to medical care.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a strong ally of Morsi and the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, paid tribute, calling Morsi a martyr. The Brotherhood’s political wing the Freedom and Justice Party has accused Egyptian authorities of deliberately killing Morsi slowly.

Morsi was democratically elected in 2012, a year after the uprising that ended the rule of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. The military toppled Morsi in the following year after massive protests and crushed the Brotherhood in a major crackdown, arresting Morsi and many others of the group’s leaders.
